How to Lose Weight (What Science Says) — and How to Make It Happen Fast! [NJ12 News Interviews Dr. Chasin]

Back to Media

Dr. DeSilva of NJ12 News interviews Dr. Mitchell Chasin of Reflections Center in New Jersey about what we actually know (scientifically know) about losing weight.

What We Actually Know About Losing Weight (Fat), from Scientific Studies

We used to think a low-calorie diet (specifically a low-fat diet) and lots of cardio was the key to losing weight, but studies have shown that weight-lifting and a diet high in protein are actually much better at helping you lean out (preserve or build muscles while reducing fat, the key to looking fit).

If you’re just starting out:

  1. Keep it simple – don’t try to get overly complex right out of the gate.
  2. Focus on a variety of healthy foods and a variety of types of exercise.
  3. Listen to your body – overworking yourself, in the beginning, is just asking for an injury that will limit your success.

If you’ve plateaued in losing weight despite a healthy diet and regular exercise:

  1. The foods you think of as healthy may actually be full of simple carbs (sugar), which your body can readily make into fat. So try to limit these sugar-laden foods.
  2. Focus on eating complex carbs and enough protein to fuel your new muscle growth.
  3. Switch up your workouts – because your body becomes easily accustomed to workouts, and you won’t make progress unless you are challenging yourself.
  4. Make sure you are lifting heavy weights! We know that resistance training is one of the better ways to boost your metabolism throughout your entire day.

How to Get Lean Fast

Losing body fat isn’t a fast process, nor is it easy to maintain a very low body fat percentage. But science is making break-throughs in this area.

Dr. DeSilva of NJ12 News interviews Dr. Mitchell Chasin of Reflections Center in New Jersey about a new technology, called EmSculpt that can actually make your muscles bigger and more defined, using electromagnetic energy.
