His goal is to recapture a rested, fresh, and youthful appearance through a personalized approach for each of his patients.

Dr. Karolak is board certified in facial plastic surgery and otolaryngology by the American Osteopathic College of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. Most recently, he was recognized as one of America’s Top Facial Plastic Surgeons by the Consumers’ Research Council of America.

Dr. Karolak received his BA in Biology from Rutgers College, where he graduated with Honors and took part in the prestigious Henry Rutgers Scholar Program. Upon graduation, he was elected into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, which is considered to be one of the most prestigious honor societies in the nation.

Dr. Karolak attended medical school at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (U.M.D.N.J – Stratford). He then went on to serve his residency in facial plastic surgery and otolaryngology at the Saint Barnabas Healthcare System in New Jersey, where he was selected as Resident of the Year and Chief Resident in Facial Plastic Surgery and Otolaryngology. “Dr. Mark Karolak is great. He has a wonderful bedside manner, encouraging, positive manner, knowledgeable, but of course most important he is a talented surgeon. The procedure was easy, it is without a doubt the very best thing that I have ever done for myself. Doctor Karolak even gave me his personal cell phone number and I did call him. He answered personally and answered my questions. How many doctors give out their cell phone numbers?”

– Margie M.

Before coming to Reflections, Dr. Karolak was part of one of the world’s largest facial plastic surgery groups and has become one of the most experienced surgeons in his field. He has successfully performed thousands of facial cosmetic procedures under local anesthesia, a choice that puts the patient first and eliminates the risks associated with general anesthesia. His extensive experience and exceptional skill have elevated his surgical precision to a level where it is as much artistic as it is technical.

Dr. Karolak is a DO, a doctor of osteopathic medicine, a type of physician who regards the body as an integrated whole, addressing patients from both a medical and lifestyle perspective. It should then come as no surprise that Dr. Karolak is known for his warmth and compassion. While DO’s have essentially the same training, qualification and authority as MD’s, their education requires an additional 300 to 500 hours of coursework, and they are known to spend a little more time with their patients.

Beyond his patients telling you he’s a very a talented surgeon, anyone who’s been in Dr. Karolak’s care will say that his kind nature and serene demeanor made them feel safe and in excellent hands.

“Besides the exceptional results that I strive to provide for each of my patients, I think the thing that sets me apart as a surgeon is that I do all of my procedures under local anesthesia. I make sure my patients are safe, calm, comfortable, and very relaxed. People are often amazed at how easy it is to get through the procedure, and are happy to have the option. It’s always best to avoid general anesthesia when possible, which carries risks that can be avoided by using local anesthesia.”

Dr. Karolak is a New Jersey native, having grown up in Wayne. When not in the office or keeping up to date on the most advanced facial rejuvenation techniques, he enjoys spending as much time as possible with his children and his wife. He also enjoys playing guitar and piano, writing music, and attending concerts when he can.

 Dr. Michelle Ellern
Board Certified Physician, Member of the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine

dr-ellernDr. Michelle Ellern’s skillful hands, artful techniques, and warm and caring personality make her a wonderful cosmetic physician. Her nurturing style of care draws patients to her, and immediately sets them at ease; but it’s the natural, artistic results they experience that keep patients returning to her care.

“Since before entering medical school I have had a desire to pursue a career in aesthetic medicine. Even as a young woman I realized aesthetics go much beyond the impact on physical appearance, they can and do have an impact on self-esteem and confidence. Being able to affect the way someone feels about themselves, and in turn give them the opportunity to live their life without feeling that they have to hide, is a large part of the reason I choose this as my specialty,” says Ellern, “My ultimate goal is to provide people with as many options and opportunities as I can to better themselves, most importantly with their self esteem.”

Dr. Ellern graduated from Rutgers University, where she was the President of the American Medical Student Association, Rutgers Chapter. She went on to complete her degree in medicine at the University Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Stratford campus, where she served as Chief Intern. Her residency took place at UMDNJ as well. She is board certified in internal medicine by the American College of Osteopathic Internists (Internal Medicine), and is a member of the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine.

When Dr. Ellern is not caring for patients at Reflections, she enjoys spending time with her growing family.
