Treating Excessive Underarm Sweating with AxiLase

If you suffer from excessive, uncontrollable underarm sweating (also called axillary hyperhidrosis), you know that it can affect your daily routine, your career and even your love life.  Up to 5% of the world’s population suffer from frequent or persistent underarm sweating, but few people are aware that there is finally a way to combat this irritating and sometimes embarrassing condition.

Treating Excessive Underarm Sweating with AxiLaseAxiLase laser therapy for excessive underarm sweating uses F.D.A. cleared technology to greatly diminish the number of sweat glands found in the armpit, bringing unmanageable perspiration under control.

The AxiLase procedure is minimally invasive, and takes about one hour to complete.  It is performed under local anesthesia, with patients awake and comfortable during the procedure.   Recovery time is short, and most patients are able to get back to their busy lives the day after the procedure.

AxiLase is performed in our Manhattan office and at our Martinsville, New Jersey skin and body center. We offer free consultations in these two facilities, as well as our Livingston, New Jersey office. We have also performed numerous consultations over the phone and via Skype for patients from outside the region.

Q&A

How Does AxiLase Work?
AxiLase uses Palomar’s Aspire laser technology to selectively target sweat glands in the underarm area.  The sweat glands are destroyed by the laser wavelength and gently suctioned out of the treatment area.

What happens during the procedure?
Two small incisions are made on the outer edges of the armpit and the area is filled with tumescent numbing fluid.  Then the laser is passed repeatedly through the area, destroying the majority of the sweat glands.  Suction is then used to remove the debris from the treatment area.  Once under way, the treatment takes about one hour.

What happens after the procedure?
When the procedure is completed, you will be ready to be driven home. We recommend that you take it easy for the remainder of the day and get a good night’s sleep. A friend or relative should be with you for the first overnight. Initial post-treatment discomfort is mild and is easily controlled with oral medication, usually Tylenol, but a narcotic can be used if needed. You will wear a compression garment for a week to aid in the recovery process.

Does AxiLase hurt?
AxiLase is a very well-tolerated procedure, and most patients describe it as one or two on a pain scale of one to ten.  During the procedure, the patient relaxes, talks with the staff, watches TV or listens to music.  There may be some soreness and tenderness in the area after treatment, but this usually only lasts for a day or two.

What is the downtime with AxiLase?
One of the great things about AxiLase is how well it fits into our patients’ busy lives.  Patients usually set aside two days for AxiLase – one for the treatment and one to recover.  After that, most are ready to get on with their usual routine, except for exercise, which is off limits for a week after the procedure.

Who is a Good Candidate for AxiLase?
Anyone whose life is negatively affected by excessive, uncontrollable underarm perspiration is a good candidate for Axilase.  In most cases, we see patients who find their sweating frequently interferes with their life.

If I plan to have it done shortly, what should I do in preparation?
If your treatment date is approaching, you should immediately stop taking any products that can thin the blood, including aspirin (or products containing aspirin}, vitamin E, ibuprofen, fish oil, herbal supplements and St. John’s Wort. If you smoke, you should stop immediately.

How Much Does AxiLase Cost?
The AxiLase treatment typically costs around $3,000 depending on the size of the treatment area.  Some insurance companies will reimburse their customers for AxiLase - they sometimes refer to it as subdermal laser ablation of sweat glands with axillary suction curretage – so you might want to check with your insurer to determine if they will.
