Broken Capillaries & Red Spots

Take control of facial redness with a little help from your friends at Reflections.

Chronic skin conditions like rosacea, acne scarring, and cumulative sun exposure can cause red broken capillaries (facial “spider” veins) and create different areas of diffuse redness (overall red coloring). We know that for many of our rosacea patients, facial redness and veins can be a lifelong struggle as heat, certain foods, skin products, and the sun can worsen your symptoms. The good news is that Reflections Center has the technology and expertise to help you address facial redness and veins, ensuring you look your best at any age!

What Causes Facial Redness?

Sun damage, acne, acne scarring, and rosacea can all lead to facial redness – but we have separate pages that cover each of these topics in great detail. This page is specifically about facial redness that is caused by genetics, aging, and environmental damage and creates cherry angiomas, broken capillaries, venous lakes, port wine stains, and other red spots or diffuse redness throughout the face.

Broken Capillaries & Widespread Facial Redness

Sun damage can cause thinning of the skin, especially in fairer skin, which makes blood vessels more visible since they are closer to the surface of the skin. In this case, lasers can help thicken the skin by stimulating new collagen growth and also safely reduce these blood vessels.

Others are simply more prone to capillaries breaking with minor trauma to the skin, and other times this damage results in permanent widespread facial redness that can be treated with lasers to safely reduce the red appearance of the skin.

Cherry Angiomas

Cherry angiomas can appear on the face or body and are bright red spots where a capillary has broken near the surface of the skin, creating a tiny, distinct spot. These are best treated with lasers that can easily target the red color in the skin and safely reduce the redness while helping this broken capillary heal itself in a more aesthetically pleasing way.

Birthmarks, Port Wine Stains, & Venous Lakes

Birthmarks are abnormalities of the skin that are present at birth. There are two types of birthmarks, including vascular birthmarks and pigmented birthmarks.

A port wine stain is a vascular birthmark in which swollen blood vessels create a purple-red discoloration of the skin. These birthmarks are always present at birth, and can appear anywhere on the body.

Venous lakes are small blood vessels in the skin, which become dilated over time. Long-term sun exposure is thought too be a factor in the cause of venous lakes.

Skin Sensitivities, Eczema, Lupus, Skin Cancers, and Psoriasis

Your skin may become red due to dermatitis, or irritation, either from immune-related diseases like lupus, eczema, and psoriasis or due to allergens (contact dermatitis). Skin cancer can also take the form of red spots. These diseases are complex and need to be treated medically, to ensure the source of inflammation causing the redness is treated. For these skin conditions, we refer patients to their dermatologists.

Our Favorite Treatments for Facial Redness

  • Treat Facial Redness With Laser Skin Rejuvenation
  • Starlux IPL

Starlux IPL uses high-intensity pulses of visible light to improve the appearance of broken capillaries, spider veins, and rosacea, as well as fine lines and wrinkles. Treatments can be performed on the face, neck, chest, and hands and require little to no downtime.  The number of treatments required depends on the severity of your condition but typically three to four treatments are performed, spaced about one month apart. Results become apparent even after the first treatment and there is a very high degree of patient satisfaction with this safe and effective therapy.

    GentleYAG

GentleYag is a revolutionary high-energy laser that is great for treating isolated blood vessels, particularly the stubborn ones on the side of the nose that contribute to bothersome facial redness. It works by emitting a gentle beam of light that harmlessly passes through the skin where it is absorbed by the target – hemoglobin in the blood vessels. The laser energy is transformed into heat, leaving the surrounding skin unaffected while treating unwanted facial veins. During treatment, the laser sprays a cooling substance that helps make the procedure even more comfortable. No downtime is required.

    vBeam Perfecta

Vbeam delivers intense but gentle bursts of light to the skin of the face, neck, or chest. The light is absorbed by undesirable, visible blood vessels on the surface of the skin, reducing redness and creating a more even complexion. A cool cryogen spray (DCD) protects the skin and makes the treatment comfortable. Patients generally need a series of two to three treatments, spaced three to four weeks apart.
