“Dr. Chasin is phenomenal. It is rare to find a doctor with the combination of skills he possesses. He has a great “bedside manner, listens well and is very skilled. I would highly recommend him for any person who is looking for improvements to their skin without full surgical intervention.”
What is the Dermapen?
The Dermapen is a microneedling device that tightens and rejuvenates damaged skin by initiating the body’s natural healing response. This is done with tiny medical-grade needles at the base of the device creating controlled micro-channels in the skin. This microneedling device resembles a pen for total control during the treatment, and therefore, better results. The Dermapen allows the physician to easily maneuver around any facial contour and delicate features such as the eyes, nose, and mouth.
At Reflections Center, we offer various other microneedling treatments to ensure you receive the treatment that is best for you. The other microneedling options we offer can be found here.
The Dermapen treatment is great for reducing fine lines, wrinkles, stretch marks, different types of scars, and also shrinking enlarged pores. The Dermapen fractional microneedling technology delivers unparalleled collagen induction. For this reason, this technology has become one of the most commonly chosen to devices when performing microneedling treatments, with over six thousand practitioners worldwide making it their first choice.
How Does the Dermapen Work?
The Dermapen works by creating micropuncture wounds in the skin which induces the body’s natural healing process. During this healing process, the skin will produce new collagen and elastin to repair any damage and continue to improve the skin’s quality over the next few months after receiving treatment. The fine tip needles used in the Dermapen are used to puncture the top layers of skin to jump-start collagen production. These microchannels will be made throughout the particular area of concern to puncture only some of the cells but not the entire region. This will allow the surrounding, undamaged, skin to help speed up the recovery process.
Depending on the concern the patient is looking to treat, the Dermapen can be set to different depths to ensure the best results possible. For example, patients who are looking to treat acne scars will require deeper punctures than those who are only looking for a “pick-me-up” for their skin. Beneficially, because of the advanced technology, this treatment has significantly less risk of developing side effects such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This is a condition that results from the stimulation of skin pigmenting cells which creates discoloration in the treated area after the skin has healed, mostly found when treating darker skin tones.
The Dermapen device has a unique spring-loaded tip that mechanically pushes 11 stainless steel microneedles gently into the skin. The needles move in a stamp-like motion for a more controlled and safer method than found in other microneedling devices. The tip of the Dermapen is disposable, ensuring that each patient receives safe and sterile treatment. The device can be set to different depths to cater to the patient’s individual needs, ranging from .25 mm to 3.0 mm. The depth can also be changed during the treatment to accommodate different concerns.
The Dermapen is mostly used on the face to treat wrinkles, facial lines, types of scarring, stretch marks, and to combat concerns caused by a loss in skin elasticity. However, this treatment can also be used to treat scars and stretch marks on any area of the body. This procedure can be used to treat mild to moderate skin concerns without the need for more invasive measures.
Ideal candidates for the Dermapen are men and women who are looking to naturally address certain skin imperfections such as wrinkles, facial lines, and scars. Unlike certain skin enhancing treatments, this device can be used for all skin types to provide rejuvenating results. In general, this treatment is great for treating skin imperfections on just about anyone. About The Treatment
For the Dermapen treatment, the topical anesthetic will be applied to the skin about 20-30 minutes before to allow the numbing agent to take effect. The physician will then place the Dermapen on the skin and move it around the treatment area in a uniform circular motion. This will allow the device to make thousands of tiny puncture wounds in the skin while still leaving the surrounding skin intact and unharmed. When dealing with certain features such as the eyes, nose, and mouth, the Dermapen can move around these areas with ease and allow for more concentrated and control treatment than found with other microneedling devices.
What Does It Feel Like?
In general, for light treatments, the sensation can be compared to that of a tingling, tickling sensation. Deeper treatments are still comfortable, but we recommend opting for a topical anesthetic.
Do I Need Anesthesia?
We use a topical anesthetic for our Dermapen patients. Before the treatment begins, the physician will apply a topical anesthetic to the treatment area to help to prevent the patient from feeling any discomfort. This will numb the area for the duration of the treatment. Often, patients have reported that the treatment is very tolerable and the numbing cream is not necessary.
Once the treatment has been completed, the skin will begin to repair itself almost immediately; however, this natural process will take a few weeks to a month to be able to notice the results. Individualized post-treatment instructions will be provided before the patient leaves our office. The treated region will remain red and slightly inflamed for the first few days after the skin enhancing procedure; however, this is entirely normal and will subside on its own. The skin will be sensitive to the touch, like that of a sunburn. It is essential to keep the region clean and hydrated for the best recovery and results. Makeup should not be applied to the skin for at least 12 hours after the Dermapen session. Makeup should not be applied to the skin for at least 12 hours after the Dermapen session.
The cost of the Dermapen treatment will vary from patient to patient depending on the depth of treatment that is required. There are 3 depths – the most superficial of which is performed by a nurse or aesthetician. Typically, for a full face treatment with the nurse or aesthetician, Dermapen is $250-300. For full face treatment with a deeper setting, the price typically ranges from $450-500. This is purposeful, because we want our patients to get the best results possible, and this is typically how we’re able to achieve those results. It’s also why we caution patients strongly against treatment with Dermapen at spas and salons. Once you come into Reflections Center for a consultation with one of our talented physicians, you will be given a custom quote based on your condition and what you are looking to achieve.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Many Dermapen Treatments Will I Need?
For the Dermapen treatment, our physicians recommend receiving multiple treatments to achieve optimal skin enhancing results. Although the skin will improve after only one session, it is advised to undergo several Dermapen treatments for further skin rejuvenation. It is recommended to receive 4-6 treatments, each spaced about a month apart from each other. During the consultation with one of our physicians, they will be able to assess your case better and recommend the number of treatments you should receive.
How Long Does It Last?
The results of the Dermapen treatment are not immediate but they are long-lasting. Most patients have reported that their results lasted anywhere from six months to one year before seeking additional treatment for skin maintenance. The longevity of the results will vary depending on the patient, how quickly their skin degenerates with age, and the particular conditions treated. Typically, our patients receive the recommended 4-6 treatments and after about one year they will receiving one treatment every six months to maintain the results.
Additional and Alternative Procedures
Fraxel Re:Store Dual Laser
Fraxel Re:Store Dual Laser is a skin resurfacing treatments that also create tiny collumns of damage within the skin. The wavelengths that are made by the device will induce collagen production within the skin and help to repair and restore its youthful quailty. This laser treats scars, age-related damage to the skin, and skin conditions such as melasma and stretch marks.
if Dermapen isn’t going to be strong enough to really make a change for your skin, we often recommend RF MicroNeedling because it creates a bigger impact using radiofrequency in addition to microneedling. This treatment concentrates the radiofrequency energy into specific areas of the skin where there is damage, such as acne scars. This treatment provides you with an effective treatment for the skin with minimal downtime.
