Sometimes we just need a bit of a “pick-me-up” to help our skin regain its youthful glow.
Our skin can begin to look dull and tired due to the elements, sun exposure, and age. This can be done without any surgical procedures and simply by stimulating the production of collagen within the skin through treatments such as microneedling. At Reflections Center, we take microneedling one step further! Now offering the vampire facial, we utilize your body’s own natural growth and healing factors to help rejuvenate your skin like never before.

What is the Vampire Facial?
Most patients are surprised to hear that the Vampire Facial isn’t actually a facial at all.
Though the name may sound a little intimidating, this procedure is one of the latest and greatest anti-aging techniques, making big waves in celebrity circles. Vampire Facial is a branded name for a procedure that combines Microneedling with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP). The name evolved because of the use of your own blood, in the form of PRP, and because of lack of downtime (i.e. as little downtime as facial), but the results are much more substantial than a facial could ever provide.
With the Vampire Facial, you can unlock the rejuvenating power of your own blood cells and plasma to provide youthful, smooth, radiant results. The Vampire Facial is a sophisticated and elegant, non-surgical process that involves two parts: platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and micro-needling. Combined, these two can pack quite a punch in the fight against the signs of aging.
Unique Benefits of a Vampire Facial
Here are some of the reasons that make the Vampire Facial a great treatment:
- Non-surgical – there is no need for surgery or to “go under the knife.”
- Quick – treatments last as little as 30 minutes and you will be out the door.
- Collagen Growth – a bonus to microneedling is that it has long-lasting benefits for healthy skin.
- No Synthetic Products – the treatment makes use of your own body’s natural tools and platelets.
- No Adverse Side Effects – Using your own blood and plasma poses no allergic risks, and this treatment uses microneedling for fractional resurfacing, which removes the risk of pigmentation changes from the treatment (such as is sometimes seen when the wrong laser settings are used).
- Rapid Recovery – You can immediately return to your normal activities as soon as the treatment is complete.
- Refreshed and Rejuvenated Skin – Over the following weeks, you will gain noticeably smoother, youthful, glowing skin.
What Does It Treat?
Weather, the sun, stress, and our natural genetic makeup play a part in our appearances and the manner that our appearances age. While there isn’t anything we can do to stop time, there are lots of things we can do to stop the signs of aging. There are many different kinds of issues and signs of wear and tear that can appear on our faces.
The Vampire Facial is helpful for treating:
- Reducing Fine lines and wrinkles
- Softening Horizontal Neck Lines (A.K.A. necklace lines)
- Tightening Loose Skin
- Brightening Dull Skin
- Improving Skin Discoloration from Sun and Environmental Damage
- Firming the Skin
- Softening scar appearance
Big areas that are dead giveaways to aging are around the eyes, mouth, and forehead. These areas tend to experience premature wrinkling and the development of fine lines. Scars can also contribute to an older appearance. If you’ve had too much sun exposure and have regularly neglected to protect your skin with sunblock, your skin’s appearance may suffer. Uneven skin texture, discoloration, and spots can develop and tack on years to your image.
Another problem is that with time, our skin naturally will lose some of its youthful perkiness and firmness. This has to do with your skin’s laxity. Skin laxity is the lack of our skin’s ability to bounce back; it’s elasticity. As the skin’s natural support layer of collagen and elastin is damaged over time, and as our bodies production of these two types of cells decreases, our skin not only becomes looser, but it becomes thinner and less firm. Together, these problems can be solved by using treatments that trigger the growth of new collagen and elastin. This is the Vampire Facial’s main method of changing the skin, and it can help with all kinds of concerns.
How Does a Vampire Facial Work?
PRP is a material that is derived from your own blood, rich in proteins, nutrients, and skin growth factors. Microneedling is a fractional skin resurfacing treatment that creates tiny channels of damage as a way to stimulate your body’s natural healing processes to build more collagen and elastin – two key components of healthy, youthful skin that slow in production as we age. Together, these two treatments create profound remodeling of both the deep support layers of the skin, composed of collagen and elastin bundles, as well as stimulating resurfacing and repair of the skin’s surface layers.
Micronneedling is a skin rejuvenating technique that is used for a variety of skin conditions, but when it is combined with PRP, it creates significantly better results. Micro-needling is a process where a hand-held pen tool is used to create microchannels in the skin. These micro-channels optimize the delivery of PRP deep into the skin layer and trigger the skin’s own natural healing processes. Additionally, we often inject the PRP into the deeper layers of the skin, to provide your body with the building blocks of new collagen and elastin, improving skin’s elasticity and firmness as well.
Combined with modern technology, this tool uses tiny needles to puncture the top layer of the skin of the treatment area. The applicator is glided over the skin’s surface at quick speeds, repeatedly until the treatment is complete. This process creates micro-sized wounds in the skin and sets in motion the skin’s natural healing process. Fresh collagen and elastin, vital elements to healthy skin, are produced to help heal and revitalize your facial appearance. This is what’s referred to as “fractional” skin resurfacing, since these “wounds” cover a small fraction of the skin, allowing for much faster recovery than an ablative treatment (which removes the entire surface of the skin). The added element of PRP gives this process a supercharged effect with more significant, longer lasting results.
This is the treatment for anyone who is looking for a boost to their appearance, gain a new lease on fresh, vibrant skin and solve some premature signs of aging. The treatment works for women and men who are in good health and have no underlying skin conditions that can pose a risk to your skin’s ability to heal. If you are explicitly looking to deal with excessive sagging or more exaggerated aging issues, there may be better options. During your complimentary consultation, you will work with a cosmetic physician to find the treatment best suited for you.
If you’re in the Millburn, Short Hills, or Bridgewater areas of New Jersey, you can schedule a complimentary consultation and be on your way to a refreshed appearance. A consultation is always an important step in any cosmetic treatment. Here, you are in the driver’s seat and get to voice your goals, concerns and point out areas that you’d like to have treated. During the consultation, the experienced team of physicians of the Reflections Center and our well-trained staff will guide you through the steps of the treatment and help you determine which strategy will best fit your personal goals. This is a good opportunity to look over photos that represent your goals, go over your medical history, and prepare for your treatment.
For those who may have done this before and are looking to go right into treatment, that option is available. If you are a first-time patient looking to treat the same day as your consultation, that can often be accomodated, just be sure to mention that at the time of booking your consultation, so that we can properly prepare you for the treatment.
The Vampire Facial Treatment Process
The Vampire Facial is quick, convenient and easily performed in the office. It is non-surgical and may take as little as half an hour and typically complete in under an hour. Those who are concerned about discomfort, there is topical numbing cream, but this adds some time as the cream sets.
The first step is to take an adequate blood sample for harvesting PRP. This is done with a syringe to withdraw the blood. Then, the blood is placed in a centrifuge to separate the PRP. A centrifuge is a machine that processes the blood sample by spinning it at high speed. This creates a centrifugal force that separates the blood cells from the platelet-rich plasma and prepares it for treatment.
There are a few ways in which you can combine microneedling with PRP during the Vampire Facial:
- Microneedling first, to create tiny channels within the skin, with PRP layered over top and massaged down into the channels
- Microneedling first, then PRP injected into the skin below
- PRP layered over the skin, then Microneedling over top to “stamp” the PRP into the skin below
We use each of these techniques for different goals. When you’re trying to achieve skin resurfacing, to soften scars and fine lines, then the first and third options are best, since they concentrate the PRP in the upper layers of the skin, where you’re trying to affect the most change. When skin is loose and thin, or has deep wrinkles, then we need to focus on affecting the collagen bundles, which are deeper in the skin, which is best achieved using option 2 above. Often, we combine these options, to create a customized Vampire Facial that will be best for the individual.
Recovery and Results
As soon as the treatment is done, you are already back on your feet. Patients sometimes experience a flushed facial appearance and redness; however this will subside on its own within a few minutes to a couple of hours. Your skin may be extra sensitive after this treatment, so it is best to avoid overexposure to the sun for a few days. It is also recommended that you take the evening off from makeup and skin care treatments, to ensure you’re not introducing these non-sterile products too deeply into the skin.
The following weeks after the treatment you will see a constant improvement in the quality of your skin. Skin is fuller, firmer, smoother and more vibrant as the body continues to improve your skin.
The cost of a Vampire Facial at our offices in New Jersey depends upon a few factors, but generally ranges from $ 650-1,100. A full face using Dermapen and PRP is most commonly around $850-900. Factors upon which this pricing varies include: whether you are having your whole face and neck treated, or just a portion, and whether you are purchasing a package of treatments, or a single treatment. We do recommend a package of 3-6 treatments, so we offer these packages at a discounted rate to encourage patients to commit to a full treatment plan.
During your complimentary consultation, you will work with one of our cosmetic physicians to build a treatment plan that works for you and a custom quote will be provided. To learn more, please contact Reflections Center and schedule your appointment today!
Frequently Asked Questions
Who will perform my treatment?
This is a more complex treatment – it requires proper diagnosis of the individual’s needs, safe use of microneedling at much deeper depths than aestheticians can legally provide in NJ, and proper maintenance of a sterile environment to ensure a safe and effective treatment. For those reasons, only cosmetic physicians perform this treatment at our offices.
What will I need to do after treatment as post-treatment care?
Post-treatment care for a Vampire Facial is very simple:
- Avoid applying skin care products and makeup to the treated area for the rest of the day of treatment
- Protect your investment by wearing sunscreen daily and following a regular skin care regimen that supports healthy skin.
That’s it! The ease of this treatment makes it a perfect fit for busy schedules, as well as for those that want to take action against age-related changes to their skin, without anyone knowing they’ve done anything.
What should I expect after a Vampire Facial?
Patients are most excited to hear that unlike with laser treatments, they won’t have to worry about several days of redness, sun sensitivity, and peeling afterward.
Recovery is very quick after a Vampire Facial. Patients can expect redness and possibly skin sensitivity immediately following treatment that may last for a few minutes up to a couple of hours. Skin sensitivity may mean cold winds and prolonged sun exposure are uncomfortable, but you should not expect pain. Swelling is usually extremely mild and not visible to others. We have not experienced bruising with any of our Vampire Facial patients, but it is possible, especially when PRP is injected into the deeper skin layers. Should this occur, please call our offices to schedule a follow-up with the physician so that we can provide you with free treatments to speed the bruise healing.
Patients should also avoid applying makeup and skin care products – even washing the face should wait until the next day, to ensure these products and non-sterile substances don’t make their way down into the microchannels and cause an infection. Your cosmetic physician will provide you with specific instructions that make the process extremely safe, which will eliminate any risks of these things.
When can I expect to start seeing results?
Most patients report that they see and feel firmer and tighter skin right away. It is believed that this is a temporary effect due to deeper inflammation and swelling from the procedure. However, real and lasting results do develop quickly. Within a few days, your skin will have completely healed and the growth of new cells will be well underway.
Each treatment offers improvement, but the most noticeable results are achieved when you complete a treatment series of 3-6. To encourage patients to commit to a series of treatments, we do offer packages of treatments at a discounted rate.
How long will my results last?
The Vampire Facial provides very long-lasting results because it encourages the growth of new cells. Unlike Botox and Fillers, these results don’t “wear off” after several months. Instead, these new cells turning back the set-point age of your skin. Your skin will continue to age, and over time you’ll find these cells have grown old, too, and lost their youthful glow. Typically this process takes a couple of years, though.
Most patients have a series of 3-6 treatments performed over a couple of months, and then have “touch-up” treatments about every 6 months or 1 year for the next couple of years.
How painful is a Vampire Facial?
The Vampire Facial is significantly less painful than a laser treatment, but there is a blood draw involved, so it’s not as easy as washing your face. Most patients put it on-par with having Botox or Fillers, or having your blood drawn for labs at your annual physicial exam. The microneedling portion general feels a bit scratchy, but not painful. If you prefer, we can provide numbing – more on that below.
Will I need numbing or anesthesia?
We don’t typically use any numbing or anesthesia for the Vampire Facial. If you are particularly sensitive, or if we intend to be more aggressive during your treatment, we may recommend numbing injections. These tiny injections will block out all feeling during the treatment, just like when you have a cavity filled at the dentist. However, it’s rare that we need to do numbing for this procedure at all.
Vampire Facial Vs. Traditional Facial vs. Vampire Facelift
The name of the Vampire Facial makes it easily confused with traditional facials and another new type of rejuvenation called the Vampire Facelift.
What makes the Vampire Facial so unique? When stacked against more traditional facials or other facial rejuvenation treatments, the Vampire Facial offers a unique set of benefits and capabilities. Common skin treatments including chemical peels, masks, and serums, generally aim to exfoliate old skin cells and add moisture to the top layer of skin. While these techniques do offer some benefits for certain types of signs of aging, the Vampire Facial comes out on top with its ability to rejuvenate the skin. For example, chemical peels are pretty simple in terms of their strategy. They involve applying a specialized chemical on top of your skin to break up dirt, oil and old skin cells. This method can only reach the very top layers of skin’s surface. Meanwhile, a Vampire Facial does not exfoliate the skin, but instead builds new skin from the inside out.
The Vampire Facelift combines PRP with dermal fillers to stimulate new collagen growth while restoring volume in the face. This treatment does not improve skin texture or firmness, address acne scars, or other skin texture and tone irregularities.
Boost Your Vampire Facial with RF Micro
The best way to get even bigger results from the Vampire Facial is to swap out microneedling for RF Microneedling (short for “Radiofrequency Microneedling”), which offers deep heated treatment of the collagen for profound tightening and skin remodeling effects. RF Microneedling is safe for all skin types, even at its most aggressive settings, making it a top choice for transformative treatments at our practices.
Alternative Treatment Options
The Vampire Facial is not the right treatment for everyone. It is ideal for those with mild to moderate skin aging and mild acne scarring, but those with more significant concerns or advanced aging will likely be recommended additional or alternative treatments during their free consultation with one of our cosmetic physicians.
NonSurgical Skin Tightening and Firming
There are many options for tightening and firming the skin without surgery which will provide more profound results than the vampire Facial. Our most popular skin tightening treatments for face and neck include Ultherapy, ThermiTight, Thecormage, Exilis Ultra, and Thread Lifts (Silhouette InstaLift and Nova PDO). To learn more about skin tightening and how we select between these treatment options, please visit our Facial Skin Tightening page.
The Vampire Facial is not aggressive enough to tackle moderate or severe acne scarring. For more substantial results, we evaluate and treat each type of acne scarring. To learn more about our philosophy of treatment for acne scars, as well as to view before and after photos, and learn about our most popular treatment options, please visit our acne scarring treatment page.
