The Next Generation of Dermal Fillers

Meet the Dermal Fillers that are Changing the way Top Cosmetic Physicians Inject

If you’ve ever looked into wrinkle treatments or lip augmentation, you’ve likely heard of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers. The two most common families of these types of dermal fillers are the Restylane and Juvederm product lines. These types of fillers are made up of different formulas of hyaluronic acid, a molecule our bodies naturally make to help them skin retain moisture. Because these types of dermal fillers are variations on a naturally-occurring substance in our bodies, they can be used to create the most natural-looking results. They are also reliably dissolvable, which makes them a good choice for first-time filler patients who might be apprehensive and desire some way to “undo” their results should they change their minds.

The NEW Juvederm

Juvederm’s current suite of products includes Voluma, Volbella, Juvederm Ultra, and Juvederm Ultra Plus. Now there’s a new filler from Juvederm called Vollure XC® that just received FDA-Approval and is set to become the new favorite among top injectors. What makes this filler so different? For a long time, Juvederm Ultra and Ultra Plus have been the workhorses of the Juvederm family, filling wrinkles, plumping lips, and pretty much doing all of the work beyond adding cheek volume. These two fillers are very similar, with only slight differences in thickness, and both lasted around 5-9 months, depending on the area treated. Areas with high activity rates or that see more movement from facial expressions, metabolized the product faster for a shorter duration of result.

Vollure XC® promises up to 18 months of similar results, achieved using new cross-linking technology that helps the product survive longer, even in high-movement areas. This product has been approved and used in Europe under the name Juvederm Volift since 2013, and has since been launched in 80 other countries. The FDA’s lengthy clinical trials typically mean products are slower to market here, but they also face rigorous safety testing prior to launch in the states, which is something we appreciate. Vollure is ideal for moderate wrinkles of the face, and will be available at our offices starting in early April 2017.

Memory Foam for Your Face?

Restylane recently added two new fillers to their line of products, Refyne and Defyne. The other members of the Restylane family of products include Restylane Lyft (previously Perlane), Restylane, and Restylane Silk. All three of these fillers were manufactured similarly, creating specific-sized droplets of hyaluronic acid that were ideal consistency for different types of tissue. Silk is the smallest particle size, making it smooth and perfect for lips and fine lines. Lyft, previously Perlane, is bouncy and big, perfect for adding lift to the cheeks and temples. Restylane, the very first dermal filler to receive FDA-Approval and become available in the United States over 20 years ago, has long been the gold standard for under-eye circles, due to its precision and longevity.

Restylane Refyne® and Restylane Defyne® represent breakthroughs in technology due to the entirely new manufacturing process. Rather than creating droplets of gel particles, Refyne and Defyne have cross-link molecules of hyaluronic acid that form a cohesive gel. This gel can stretch without breaking, and returns to its original shape time after time, just like memory foam. Why does this matter? It allows the gel to move naturally with your face, so your facial expressions won’t give away the enhancements you’ve made. It also makes Refyne and Defyne uniquely long-lasting. Because they aren’t broken down by movement, they can take a beating and stay true to their original results for over a year. Much longer than the usual 6 months for high movement areas.
